Warner Sends ‘Barbie’ on a Mission

Warner Bros. Pictures is bringing its blockbuster summer movie “Barbie” to the biggest screens possible.

The Burbank-based entertainment company owned by Warner Brothers Discovery Inc. is doing a limited one-week run of the smash summer film on Imax screens across North America and in select international markets. The film began playing in Imax theaters on Sept. 22.

As an extra incentive, a special greeting from director Greta Gerwig will play before the film, while exclusive post-credit footage, selected by Gerwig, will follow.

Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution, and Andrew Cripps, president of international distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, said in a joint statement that they wanted to serve all the fans who made this the summer of “Barbie” in every way imaginable.

“We couldn’t think of a better way than to serve up the biggest film of 2023 and the biggest Warner Bros. film of all time on the biggest, most experiential screens around,” Cripps and Goldstein said.

Since its release on July 21, “Barbie” has brought in $626 million at domestic box office, with an additional $790 million in international box office receipts, for a total of $1.4 billion.

In the greater San Fernando Valley region, Imax theaters showing “Barbie” include AMC Topanga 12 in Canoga Park, the AMC Burbank 16, the AMC Americana at Brand 18 in Glendale, the Regal Simi Valley Civic Center, the Regal Edwards Valencia, the Regal Edwards Camarillo and the Cinemark Lancaster.

“We encourage moviegoers everywhere, whether they’ve seen ‘Barbie’ or not, to see it in Imax for a can’t-miss moment in film history,” Goldstein and Cripps added.

Based on Mattel Inc.’s doll brand Barbie, the film stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, alongside America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman and Will Ferrell. The film also features Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren who is the narrator.

Gerwig directed “Barbie” from a screenplay she wrote with Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach. The film’s producers are Robbie, Oscar nominee David Heyman, Tom Ackerley and Robbie. Gerwig, Baumbach, Mattel Chief Executive Ynon Kreiz, Richard Dickson, Michael Sharp, Josey McNamara, Courtenay Valenti, Toby Emmerich and Cate Adams are executive producers.
