Cable channel HBO and its streaming counterpart HBO Max came out as the big winner when Emmy nominations were announced on July 12.
The Burbank-based cable network and HBO Max, in Culver City, had a total of 140 nominations from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the organization that puts on the annual awards show.
It was the 20th time that the HBO brand has received the most primetime Emmy nominations out of all the industry’s networks and platforms. It beat the previous record of 137 nominations received in 2019.
Casey Bloys, chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max, said the company was proud of its Emmy nominees.
“This is a testament to the amazing talent in front of and behind the camera, as well as our gifted programming teams and their unwavering commitment to creating content that breaks through to audiences in a meaningful way,” Bloys said in a statement.
HBO and HBO Max are part of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., the company formed earlier this year when Discovery bought WarnerMedia from AT&T Inc.
“Succession,” a previous Emmy winner from HBO, scored the most nominations, amassing 25, including outstanding drama series, two for outstanding lead actor in a drama series, two for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, as well as for outstanding writing for a drama series.
Next was “The White Lotus” from HBO, with 20 nominations, including outstanding limited or anthology series or movie and five nominees for supporting actress for a limited or anthology series or movie.
Following that was 17 nominations for HBO Max’s “Hacks,” including outstanding comedy series and outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for series star Jean Smart; HBO’s “Euphoria,” with 16 nominations, including outstanding drama series and outstanding lead actress in a drama series; and 14 nominations for HBO’s “Barry,” including outstanding comedy series and outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for star Bill Hader.
Up the road from HBO, in Burbank, The Walt Disney Co. came away with 141 total nominations, led by Hulu with 58 and Disney Plus with 34. Hulu’s breakout hit, “Only Murders In The Building,” led the nominations with 17.
The Emmys will be broadcast Sept. 12 on NBC and will air live on Peacock, the network’s streaming channel.
