Kaiser Gives To Colleges For COVID

Three San Fernando Valley community colleges – Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar, Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys and Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills – will receive grant funding from nonprofit health provider Kaiser Permanente as part of a White House vaccination initiative.

The community college grantees are a part of a broader Kaiser Permanente grant addressed to the Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges. The foundation announced on June 18 that it is offering an incentive of $75 to each Los Angeles Community College District student who gets vaccinated.  Students with a valid vaccination card dated on or after June 16 can apply for the incentive. Bringing a friend or family member to get vaccinated will allow students to receive a maximum of $150, until all funds are used, according to Michael Fuller, the district’s director of institutional advancement.

The community colleges are three of 10 community-based organizations across Southern California that will collectively be provided up to $1.85 million.

The grants are part of a series of initiatives and programs conducted by Kaiser to increase public trust in the COVID-19 vaccine and provide easy access to receive it.

The other programs include: • A sweepstakes that gives 1000 winners a range of rewards including wellness retreats, home meal deliveries, personal training equipment, gym memberships and family trips to theme parks and national parks;  • An influencer and social media campaign;  • Publication of Kaiser Permanente’s vaccine confidence toolkit, which offers information on vaccine equity and administrative approaches to vaccine distribution;  • And culturally relevant mailings to encourage vaccination for unvaccinated eligible people.

“There are still many Americans who have yet to be vaccinated, and we’ve designed these new programs to increase vaccination,” Greg Adams, Kaiser’s chief executive, said in a statement.  “From standing up mass vaccination sites to deploying mobile clinics that have reached the most vulnerable populations, we’ve made every effort to vaccinate our communities.” The other Southern California organizations receiving grants are: El Monte School District, El Sol Neighborhood Education Center, YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, Faith Advisory Council for Community Transformation, Latino Health Access, SAC Health Systems, Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce/Latino COVID-19 Task Force; Family Health Centers of San Diego; and San Diego Refugee Communities Coalition.
