Dine Brands to Launch ‘Flip’d by IHOP’ Casual Restaurants

IHOP will debut a new restaurant concept called Flip’d by IHOP to meet a growing demand for made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant chain, owned by Dine Brands Global Inc. in Glendale, will open the first flip’d by IHOP location in New York City this summer, with three additional sites in Lawrence, Kan., and Columbus and Dublin, Ohio to follow later in the year.As the name suggests, Flip’d is an offshoot of IHOP and will offer similar breakfast items to the sit-down chain in a faster and more portable format. It will sell pancake bowls and egg sandwiches tailored for working or on-the-go consumers, as well as more afternoon-centric options including burritos, steak burgers and chicken sandwiches.IHOP President Jay Johns said since the chain originally announced flip’d in late 2019, a lot has changed, and the company wanted to ensure that it was evolving the concept to mee the needs of customers. While there is a pent-up demand for a return to dining in restaurants, IHOP anticipates that its delivery and takeout business is here to stay as consumer needs continue to shift and they seek different ways to experience food, Johns said.“With flip’d, we can provide that on-the-go fast casual experience, making now the perfect time to bring this concept into the world,” he added in a statement.Currently, there are more than 1,600 IHOP restaurants in the U.S. and another 100-plus IHOP restaurants globally.Shares of Dine Brands (DIN) closed down $1.51, or 1.6 percent, to $94.77 on the New York Stock Exchange, on a day when the Dow Jones closed up a fraction of a percent.
