AI Company Eta Compute Raises $12.5 Million

Westlake Village tech firm Eta Compute Inc. has raised $12.5 million in a Series C round led by Synaptics Inc. in San Jose, the company announced Tuesday.Eta, founded in 2015, makes artificial intelligence systems for use in spatial sensors. It specializes in energy efficient “edge AI,” or when machine learning algorithms process data collected by a hardware device without being connected to the internet. This is applied in motion and environmental sensing and image and audio analytics.Along with the investment from Synaptics, Eta has entered a co-development and marketing partnership with the company, which makes human interface products such as touchpads for laptops and touch and voice technology for smart home devices and smart cars.

Eta will have access to Synaptics’ low-power Katana Edge AI SoC product, and Synaptics will access Eta’s Tensai Flow software and neural network compilers. Also, Synaptics’ Chief Strategy Officer Satish Ganesan will join Eta’s board.Eta Chief Executive Ted Tewksbury said in a statement he’s “delighted and privileged” to have Ganesan join the board.“Partnering with Synaptics for our next generation silicon enables us to rapidly and cost-effectively extend Tensai into new applications requiring higher performance sound, image and sensor processing,” added Tewksbury. “Combined with our new funding, we will now be able to expand our available market, grow design wins and accelerate the introduction of new modules and software.”Eta said the Series C brings the company’s total funding to $31.9 million.
