Valley film studios took the top three spots in 2017 box office market share, according to an analysis by Variety. Walt Disney Co. in Burbank was the top studio for the second year in a row. Disney had a 21.3 percent market share and produced the year’s two biggest box office performers, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Warner Bros. in Burbank placed second with an 18.9 percent share. Universal Studios in Universal City finished third with a 14 percent market share. In terms of number of movies, Disney released only 12 this year, down from 16 in 2016. Warner Bros. released 31 films and Universal 17. The fourth-place studio was Fox, which Disney plans to acquire in 2018. Fox had a 12.8 percent market share, according to Variety.
