Mica-Tech Inc. will apply for a $2 million federal grant to develop a next generation satellite-based control systems for electric utility substations. If approved by the Department of Energy, the grant would cover half of the projected $4 million in developmental costs. The funds come from the Smart Grid Investment Grant program. Camarillo-based Mica-Tech, a subsidiary of AML Communications Inc., designed the first generation system monitoring and controlling power grids. The system has been in use in California for 10 years.
