Theater Adds to Lively NoHo Arts District

Films: Ceremony in December. The final phase of the expansive NoHo Commons complex in North Hollywood was completed Dec. 20 with the opening of the Laemmle NoHo 7 movie theater. The seven-screen theater is Laemmle’s first to have full stadium seating in two of the auditoriums and to have all digital projection of the films, CEO Greg Laemmle said. The theater adds to an already vibrant entertainment area that includes multiple live theaters, performance space, art galleries, production facilities, and the headquarters of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The theater chain was interested in the NoHo Arts district because it was an underserved area, close to public transit, and could add to the urban experience, Laemmle said. The $287 million NoHo Commons project, developed by J.H. Snyder Co., also includes apartments and condominiums, retail and restaurant, a nine-story office building and parking garage. Construction on phase three began in 2008. The City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency acted as matchmaker to bring North Hollywood to the attention of Laemmle. The agency contributed $24 million to the NoHo Commons project. In surveys of what the project should include, community residents specifically said they wanted a Laemmle theater, said David Bloom, a spokesman for the redevelopment agency. —Mark R. Madler
