Thor Trucks Inc. has rebranded itself as Xos and will expand its product offering beyond just trucks, the company announced. In a posting at the website of the North Hollywood startup, the company said the rebranding represents a new stage as it looks to move beyond its core business of electric commercial vehicles. Xos is short for exosphere, the outermost section of Earth’s atmosphere, and is representative of the company’s investment in developing new technologies and mobility products that exceed anything currently available on the market, the company said on its site. Dakota Semler, co-founder and chief executive, said that he and business partner Gio Sordoni see Xos as being the operating system for fleets – “the intersection between energy and software.” “That the name is cheeky, playful and maybe slightly irreverent doesn’t hurt either,” Semler said in a statement. Xos is developing the electric semi-truck, the ET-One, which has the ability to haul up to 80,000 pounds with a range of 300 miles per charge. The company also has a medium duty electric delivery truck capable of 200 miles on a single charge.
