The Burbank City Council has set Nov. 8 as the date for a special election for residents to approve a replacement terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport. The council gave its approval to the project at a special meeting on Monday. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority wants to build the 14-gate, 355,000-square-foot replacement terminal on 49 acres north of the existing terminal, which was built in 1930. Any terminal plan falls under Measure B, an initiative passed in 2000 that requires public approval of expansion or relocation of the airport’s terminal. The cost of the election and to produce and mail the supplemental information booklet to be sent to voters is estimated at $200,000. The airport authority will reimburse the city for that cost. In addition to approving the replacement terminal, Burbank city leaders also approved a development agreement that gives the city control over critical decisions about the future of the airport. If the ballot measure receives backing from residents, the authority will have the right to build the new terminal. The cost of the project will be paid for by airport users and airlines, and grants from the Federal Aviation Administration. City funds will not be used for the construction.
