Princess Launches On-Board Gambling Platform

As Princess Cruises prepares for a possible return to sea later this year, the Santa Clarita cruise line this week announced the launch of Ocean Sportsbook, a sports betting platform that will be available to passengers aboard “MedallionClass” ships.Built by British software developer Miomni, the sportsbook is part of Ocean Casino, a digital platform that allows passengers to place bets and play electronic versions of blackjack, slots, poker and roulette from anywhere onboard.

The Ocean Medallion is a wearable device that stores guests’ information for easy check-in, allows keyless entry into rooms and can be used to charge food and beverages to a customer’s tab.Princess President Jan Swartz said in a statement that cruising no longer means disconnecting from a big game or event.“On Princess MedallionClass cruises, our guests can stay connected with their friends and family around the world, and now with Ocean Sportsbook, they can also stay connected to their favorite teams and wager on a host of events,” she added. However, one National Basketball Association franchise will be excluded from the sportsbook. Passengers won’t be able to place bets involving the Miami Heat because Micky Arison, chairman of Princess’ parent company Carnival Corp., owns the team.Princess plans to resume cruising in some markets as soon as May 14.Swartz said in a statement the company is still working to meet the health and safety requirements set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Framework for Sailing Order."We continue to prepare our ships for our return to service and we are eager to see our guests back on board to create summertime memories,” she said.
