Wireless networking equipment manufacturer Xirrus Inc. has been acquired by Riverbed Technologies, a San Francisco technology firm. The Thousand Oaks company will expand Riverbed’s wide area network and cloud networking products with the integration of its equipment for Wi-Fi connections used in large venues such as colleges, convention centers, hotels, corporate offices and hospitals. Xirrus Chief Executive Shane Buckley said the company was thrilled to be part of Riverbed and to continue to thrive in a fast-growing market. “Together with Riverbed, we embrace a tremendous opportunity to create the world’s first (software-defined wide area network) solution that covers the core to the edge of the network,” Buckley said in a prepared statement. Xirrus has deployed more than 10,000 Wi-Fi access points – round devices mounted on the ceiling that resemble smoke detectors – for customers that include Microsoft, University of Mississippi, Liverpool Football Club and Paul Hastings Law Firm. Riverbed has more than $1 billion in annual revenue and is owned by private investment firm Thoma Bravo LLC, in San Francisco, and Teachers’ Private Capital, the Toronto-based private investor division of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.
