Semtech Applies LoRa Technology to Fire Prevention

Semtech Corp. will provide its long-range, low-power technology for a fire prevention system from a South Korean company. The Camarillo semiconductor and Internet-of-Things (IoT) product developer said that as a result of the integration of the LoRa technology, LDT, a South Korean provider to display and IoT industries, is able to provide real-time analytics, sensing, connectivity and geolocation to measure fire levels and bring protection to commercial facilities, such as shopping malls and local markets, from fire damage.Marc Pegulu, vice president of IoT product marketing and strategy at Semtech, said the prevention and response to hazardous situations in record time demonstrates Semtech’s ability to creating a safer and smarter environment through its LoRa technology.“This collaboration with LDT for its smart fire prevention system is a perfect example of how LoRa capabilities – long range and low power – are solving a real-world challenge for building owners today,” Pegulu said in a statement. To implement the LDT smart fire prevention system, a gateway is installed on the ceiling of each floor of a building and sensors are installed in all rooms. Once a sensor detects a fire, the real-time fire data is sent to a gateway that uses LoRa connected to the smart fire prevention system. The response is sent to emergency personnel and the property manager via mobile device or computer allowing them to respond effectively, Semtech said in a release. The company announced the LDT deal on Thursday. Shares of Semtech (SMTC) closed Friday down 13 cents, or a fraction of a percent, to $66.12 on the Nasdaq, on a day when that market also closed down a fraction of a percent.
