City Tries to Slow Chatsworth Street Racers

The Los Angeles City Council has greenlighted a pilot program to curb street racing in the region, starting with the installation of rubber strips on an industrial road in Chatsworth. The Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to fund the placement of “rumble strips” on Chatworth’s Plummer Street. Similar to speed bumps, rumble strips are used on highways to alert drivers that they have crossed center or shoulder lines, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Plummer Street is among those referred to colloquially as “Canoga Speedway” by fans of the illegal sport. Races frequently takes place along the streets between Canoga Avenue and Topanga Canyon Boulevard. A street racing accident there killed two people in February 2016. The pilot project was introduced last week by District 12 Councilman Mitch Englander. It is expected to cost around $14,000, according to the Councilman’s office.
