Northridge has lost its Marie Calendar’s Restaurant & Bakery franchise after its parent company, Perkins & Marie Callender’s LLC, filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors. The eatery at 19310 Business Center Drive is one of more than a dozen Marie Callender’s restaurants in the greater L.A. area that shuttered this week following the filing. In total, 19 “underperforming” locations nationwide have closed, according to a statement from Perkins & Marie Callender’s. The location at 14743 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks will remain open. The company also closed at least 10 Perkins restaurants, none of which are in California. A statement from the Memphis-based company explained that the Chapter 11 filing would facilitate the sale of its Perkins’ business and a segment of its Foxtail bakery business, which supplies its restaurants and distributors, to a buyer called Perkins Group LLC. “The company is continuing discussions with investors and potential buyers regarding the Marie Callender’s restaurants,” it said. Perkins & Marie Callender’s public filing points to declining sales and rising labor costs as factors leading to the restructuring. It estimates 1,190 employees will be affected by the closings.
