L.A. Mission College Dean Killed

Darlene Montes, the dean of academic affairs at Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar, was killed Monday morning at her home at Rancho Cucamonga. She was 49. A statement from college President Monte Perez says, “Our entire campus community was saddened to learn of the untimely death of our beloved Dean of Academic Affairs Darlene Montes. … She was well-loved on campus, and touched the lives of countless community college students, not to mention faculty, staff and administrators.” According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, a man called the sheriff’s office about 8:30 a.m. Monday claiming to have stabbed his adult daughter to death at a house in the 6300 block of Elkridge Place in Rancho Cucamonga. Deputies arrived to find Montes with multiple stab wounds. They rushed her to a hospital where she died. Her father, Joe Edward Montes, 71, was arrested on suspicion of murder based on his statements to the deputies and evidence found at the scene. He was booked at the West Valley Detention Center. The homicide remains under investigation.
