A newly formed nonprofit named Regarding Her, or RE:Her, aims to support women-owned restaurants in Los Angeles County and has partnered with delivery service DoorDash to launch a grant program for culinary businesses in need of COVID-19 relief funding.RE:Her will distribute 15 cash grants of $10,000 each, sponsored by DoorDash, to female-identifying food and beverage entrepreneurs in L.A. County. The committee to select the grantees includes Kristin Aldana-Taday of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, located in Westlake Village, as well as Studio City-based Mendocino Farms founder Ellen Chen, among other food writers, restaurateurs and industry professionals.Independent, majority women-owned restaurants or culinary businesses in L.A. County, including catering companies and food trucks, are eligible to apply if they meet certain staff size and revenue thresholds and demonstrate need. Applications for the grant program will be accepted from May 17-23, with recipients announced June 14.“Over the last four months, RE:Her has grown into a platform for connection for 250-plus women to share resources, information and support, and we want to continue to champion and empower our community with these grants,” Lien Ta, a RE:Her founding member and managing partner of All Day Baby restaurant in Silver Lake, said in a statement. “We are excited to roll this out to give our members a leg-up as they rebound from the most challenging time in the history of our industry.”Since its launch in November 2020 in response to the impact of COVID-19 on the restaurant industry, the nonprofit has aimed to provide opportunities and resources to women restaurateurs. The members of RE:Her’s leadership team, including chef and founding member Sandra Cordero of Gasolina Cafe in Woodland Hills, along with eight other owners of L.A. County restaurants, operate the organization pro bono.
