Sphere Entertainment Co., a Las Vegas-based entertainment and media company, has launched a content studio in Burbank. The campus, dubbed Sphere Studios, is home to a new, ultra-high-resolution camera system called “Big Sky.”
“Big Sky is a giant leap forward for imaging and a testament to innovative teams at Sphere Studios who made this technology a reality,” said Deanan DaSilva, Big Sky’s lead architect at Sphere Studios.
Sphere Entertainment Co. began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in April under the symbol SPHR. The company said that its portfolio includes Sphere, an “entertainment medium” that will open its first venue near the Las Vegas strip this fall. It will host concerts and artist residencies, as well as marquee events.
Sphere Studios, which will handle production and postproduction work for Sphere Entertainment Co., sits on a 68,000-square-foot campus that contains development offices, production and editing suites, and sound stages. The studio’s main feature is a 28,000-square-foot screening and production facility called the Big Dome, which is a miniature version of the spherical building being built for the company’s Las Vegas venue.
The studio’s rollout was accompanied by the announcement of Big Sky. Development on the camera system began in early 2021, and the company said its first shoot took place in October last year. To date, Sphere has filed eight patents associated with Big Sky’s technology.
“Big Sky allows us to capture cinematic content at a level of detail never before possible, opening up extraordinary possibilities and pushing immersive imaging technology forward in a way that will resonate throughout the entertainment industry,” DaSilva said.
