East L.A. Community Corp., in collaboration with New Directions for Veterans, YM Architects and Westport Construction, has begun building the $34.5 million Sun Valley Senior Veterans Apartments, according to Urbanize.LA. The development is the most ambitious the Boyle Heights-based nonprofit developer has undertaken to date. Located at 9041 N. Laurel Canyon Blvd., the four-story building will include 88 one- and two-bedroom units reserved for qualifying senior incomes. Amenities will include laundry, fitness center, library, media room and computer lab. The Sun Valley facility will also provide a roster of on-site supportive services. The project comes in the wake of Los Angeles City Council’s latest efforts to combat homelessness. With each council member committed to building a minimum 222 units of permanent supportive housing in their respective districts, the Sun Valley complex represents a dent in the unit-count for District 6 Councilwoman Nury Martinez.
