Woodbury University Receives Grant Installment as Hispanic-Serving Institution

Woodbury University has received a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic Serving Institution.This is the Burbank school’s first payment of a $3 million, five-year grant to be used toward sustainability programs.Woodbury plans to use the funds to develop three STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) bachelor degree programs: sustainable environmental practices, construction management and environmental science.Woodbury was awarded another $3 million grant through DHSI last year, also for a five year duration — the university is using these funds to develop three computer science majors.“In addition to the curricular part of the grant, Woodbury will create an even more focused student-success model of professional advising,” the university added in a statement.Woodbury met eligibility requirements for the grant because 25 percent of its full-time undergraduate students were Hispanic last year. For the most recent grant installment, 249 applications were received and 118 across the country were awarded funding; Woodbury is one of four private, four-year universities in the state to receive the grant this year.New awards totaled upwards of $69 million, Woodbury said of HSI program funding.
