Whole Foods to Open Store Without Cashiers in Sherman Oaks

Whole Foods Market announced Wednesday that it will open a new Sherman Oaks store next year without cashiers featuring Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, which allows customers to pay for groceries by QR code or the wave of their palm.

“To skip the checkout with Just Walk Out Shopping, customers can enter these stores in three ways: scan the QR code in the Whole Foods Market or Amazon app, insert a credit or debit card linked to their Amazon account, or hover their palm using Amazon One,” a statement from Whole Foods Market said.

Amazon.com Inc., which owns Whole Foods Market, debuted the palm-reading Amazon One technology last year. “Enrollment in Amazon One takes less than a minute, and after inserting a credit card linked to an Amazon account, customers can enter and pay at the store by hovering a palm over the Amazon One device.”

The Sherman Oaks store will have self-checkout options for patrons paying with cash, gift cards and EBT. It will not have cashiers.

The grocery store will use “a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning,” to create a virtual cart that is purchased as patrons leave the store.
