One of the founders and owners of Vallarta Supermarkets passed away as the result of an automobile accident on Nov. 23, the company announced last week.
Miguel Gonzalez, with his brothers and other family members, launched the Sylmar-based chain of supermarkets – now with more than 50 locations in California – in 1985. The colorful markets are known for their selection of Mexican and Latin American products, a nod to the family’s roots in Jalisco, Mexico.
Gonzalez, a graduate of Van Nuys High School, worked at Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena prior to joining his family to kickstart the supermarket chain. He gave up a promising career at JPL, according to a company statement, but quickly took to the work of building the markets, helping to develop the signature architecture and interior design of Vallarta stores.
“Miguel was known for his winsome smile and a twinkle in his eye that reflected his charismatic personality; one that brought joy and excitement to all who would share experiences with him,” read a company statement.
Gonzalez is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, his two sons and granddaughter, as well as his parents and siblings.
