Global materials company Avery Dennison Corp. has appointed Deon Stander as its new chief operating officer and president.

Stander, 53, was the vice president and general manager of retail branding and information solutions division at the Glendale-based company. He will be responsible for Avery Dennison’s global business operations and have all business unit leaders report to him in his new position.

“This appointment reflects the next evolution of our leadership capabilities that will enable our continued success over the long term, as we accelerate our strategies to deliver value for all of our stakeholders,” Mitch Butier, Dennison’s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

Stander also played an important role in shaping Dennison’s sustainability strategy and business roadmap.

“Deon has led the remarkable transformation of our RBIS (radio frequency identificiation) business, establishing a strong foundation for profitable growth, and he has been an excellent thought partner at the enterprise level,” Butier added. “He is highly respected throughout the company for his exemplary vision, and I look forward to our continued partnership.”

Shares of Avery Dennison closed down $8.58, or nearly 5 percent, to $166.94 on the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday, while the Dow closed down nearly 1.8 percent.
