Asian Theme Parks to Open From Legacy

Design firm Legacy Entertainment is ending the year on a high note.

The Santa Clarita theme park studio at present has five projects currently under construction for a total of $1 billion in investment.

Among the projects is Lotte World Adventure Busan, being built by South Korean theme park operator Lotte Corp. in the city of Busan.

Marcus King, Legacy’s director of projects, said that the Busan project breaks the mold of expectations from new Asian theme parks over the last two decades.

“Here, guests will find all the ‘wow factor’ that comes with the Lotte brand, but they’ll also be surprised by the amount of area we’ve dedicated to gardens, water features and other passive features,” King said in a statement. “It will be a perfect stage for the entire family to unwind and connect together.”

When the park opens early next year, it will be the ninth collaboration between Legacy and Lotte World to open to the public.

Another new project slated to open next year is Chimelong Marine Science Park in Zhuhai, China. At 4 million square feet, it will be the largest indoor theme park in the world.

“Built as a second gate for the adjoining Chimelong Ocean Kingdom theme park, the Chimelong Marine Science Park has been designed as the ultimate complimentary companion for its neighbor,” Legacy said of the project on its website. “Within this colossal climate-controlled facility, visitors will be treated to rides, shows and attractions completely distinct from those in the Ocean Kingdom, and the indoor nature of the park guarantees a perfect visit every day of the year, regardless of the Greater Bay Region’s extreme weather.”

Eric Carnagey, Legacy’s managing director, said this project could only happen in China.

“Visitors will be amazed to discover an experience completely distinct from the first gate next door, as they’re treated not only to attractions that are the firsts-of-their-kind in Asia, but also others that have never been seen anywhere in the world,” Carnagey said in a statement.

And yet another new project under construction is the “Destination Dining” initiative near Jakarta in Indonesia. It is the first of three food-focused projects under the “Destination Dining” name, the others being in China and Saudi Arabia.

Legacy launched the initiative after being asked by developers for creative solutions to their retail-centric properties and projects. Along with restaurant tenants, Legacy will also include live entertainment and integrated rides into the dining locations.

Chief Operating Officer Barry Kemper said that Legacy has been overwhelmed by the response to the “Destination Dining” initiative.

“It turns out there is a huge appetite for projects which bring together elements of dining, shopping and entertainment packaged with our signature creativity,” Kemper said in a statement.
