National Notification Network will provide an emergency notification system for Virginia Tech, the Associated Press reported Friday. The system from the Glendale-based firm allows students, faculty and staff to be alerted to emergencies by text messages, e-mails and online instant messages, the AP said. The school began considering expanding its emergency alert system before the April 16 shootings in which a student killed 32 people in a dormitory and classroom building before committing suicide, the AP reported a school spokesman as saying. Members of the Tech community can sign up for the “VT Alerts” system beginning July 2, the AP said.
