Valley Presbyterian Hospital President and CEO Albert Greene, who helped make the hospital one of the fastest growing in the area, died April 16 from pancreatic cancer. He was 59. Greene headed Valley Presbyterian since March 12006 and was a familiar face in the San Fernando Valley business community having served on the board and executive committee of the Valley Industry & Commerce Association. He continued to run the hospital after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June. He died with his family at his side. Hospital Board Chairman Dave Fleming called Greene a charismatic leader who made a remarkable impact. “Those of us who knew Al had a deep admiration and tremendous respect for him as a colleague, mentor and friend,” Fleming said. Greene started his hospital administration career in Detroit and later worked at hospitals in Milwaukee, Berkeley and Los Angeles. While at Valley Presbyterian, Greene coordinated the hospital’s 50th anniversary. In a Business Journal interview in February 2008, Greene described the technological advances made in medicine in those five decades. “We’re seeing an explosion in nanotechnology, diagnostic devices,” Greene said. “Fifty years ago, there was no hip replacement, joint replacement or knee replacement.” The hospital board will form a special committee to lead a search for Greene’s replacement. In the interim, the hospital’s executive team will manage the facility under the direction of the board. Greene is survived by his wife Jo-Linda Greene, son Jeremy Greene, daughter Stacy (Hoby) Pearce and grandson Rory Pearce. Mark R. Madler
