Recreational propeller aircraft flights have decreased at Whiteman Airport due to the smoke and haze from the Station wildfire in the nearby mountains. The Pacoima airfield, however, is seeing high fuel flowage from the news media and U.S. Forest Service helicopters. “There have been 15 to 20 firefighters camped out here since last Friday, said airport manager Jason Morgan. The Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations Unit operates out of a facility at the airport. The Station fire broke out Aug. 26 near La Canada-Flintridge and spread in all direction to consume more than 140,000 acres resulting in mass evacuations, the deaths of two firefighters and more than 100 buildings destroyed. Whiteman Airport is owned by Los Angeles County and operated by contractor American Airports Corp.
