New Mobile Game a First for Marvel

Fans of “The Avengers” now can play The Hulk anywhere with the debut of Marvel Entertainment’s first mobile game. The company launched the “Avengers Initiative” last week, which allows gamers to play the role of the iconic comic book character as he fights criminals and monsters who have escaped from a secret holding facility. “‘Avengers Initiative’ represents Marvel’s biggest and most ambitious mobile gaming project to date,” said TQ Jefferson, Marvel’s vice president of game production, in a prepared statement. “With this launch, Marvel brings console-quality graphics and gameplay to mobile gaming, along with an experience that will continue over time with the addition of new Avengers.” The game is currently available on the App Store for $6.99, and free episodic content will be released in the coming months, expanding the game to feature other characters from The Avengers franchise. While the current version of the app is only available for Apple’s iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad2 and The New iPad, Marvel plans to release an Android version soon through Google Play. Marvel has previously offered games on Facebook, including “Marvel: Avengers Alliance,” which featured a similar storyline involving an event called the Pulse, which allowed the game’s villains to be released. The two games are now connected, and players will be able to earn points, unlock in-game items and move up levels on each platform through Marvel XP, a service that tracks progress across platforms. – Kelly Goff
