Following a 42-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the Los Angeles Rams on Monday announced the team has released Head Coach Jeff Fisher after five seasons with the NFL franchise. Before the 2016 season started, Fisher signed a two-year contract extension with the Rams. This season would have been the fifth and final year of his current contract that paid him approximately $7 million annually, according to the Los Angeles Times. During his time with the Rams, Fisher had a record of 31 wins, 45 losses and one tie, and the team never made a playoff appearance. His last winning season as a head coach was in 2008, when he led the Tennessee Titans to a 13-3 record. Sunday’s loss to the Falcons was Fisher’s 165th career loss, tying him with Dan Reeves for the most losses by a head coach in NFL history. “This is the right time to make a change as our performance has not lived up to my or our fans’ expectations,” said Rams’ Owner and Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke in a statement released on the team’s website. “We all are focused on improving as an organization and building a team that makes Los Angeles proud.” Kroenke, whose estimated worth is $7.7 billion according to Forbes, is expected to fill the position with a big-name coach. Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh have been mentioned as potential replacements in media reports. Chief Operating Officer Kevin Demoff held a press conference Monday at the team’s temporary headquarters at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks to discuss the changes. The Rams’ record this season sits at 4-9 with three games left. The team’s next game is Thursday against the Seahawks in Seattle.
