Business Journal Wins ‘Best Newspaper’ Award

The San Fernando Valley Business Journal won two journalism awards late Thursday from the trade association that represents business journals across the country. The Business Journal won gold awards for Best Newspaper and Best Overall Design in the small tabloid category. Judges, who are professors at the University of Missouri’s journalism school, praised the business journal in the Best Newspaper award as “beautifully produced” and said it “extensively covers and clearly represents its community. “There is an impressive mix of content, with well-written features and news stories throughout. Design is clean and well-organized, with sophisticated typographic treatment and dynamic photography.” For the Best Overall Design award, judges noted that the “typography is always strong, professional and consistent, particularly with creative headlines. … Original photography is sized and edited well.” In a note of congratulations to his colleagues, Publisher Charles Crumpley wrote that one aspect that stood out “is our consistency in winning. This is the third time in the last four years we won the Gold for Best Newspaper and the third time in the last five years we won for Best Design. The awards this year are not some random fluke but part of a pattern of excellence.” Last year, the paper won a bronze in the Best Newspaper category and previously won gold awards in that category in 2017 and 2018. It also earned a silver award for overall design last year as well. The trade association is named the Alliance of Area Business Publishers. Its members are city business journals as well as regional and state business-oriented publications. The awards presentation came at the end of the association’s annual conference, held virtually this week.
