Capstone Sells Turbine to Russian Data Center

Capstone Turbine Corp. received an order for one of its microturbines for use at a data center in Russia. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The C600 Signature series microturbine system from the Van Nuys manufacturer is expected to be commissioned in October. The order was secured by BMTec, the official distributor of Capstone products in Russia.Because data centers have high electricity and cooling requirements and operate continuously with a nearly constant load, they represent great candidates for Capstone’s microturbines, the company said. The C600 microturbine will initially provide electricity to the data center. In a second phase, it will be upgraded to provide combined heating and cooling capabilities. Once complete, the C600S package is expected to provide the data center with electricity, hot water and chilled water, the company added.“A Capstone system was selected by the customer for its economic benefits as well as its ability to generate power and thermal energy on-site at the source,” Aleksy Zakharov, chief technology officer of BMTec, said in a statement.Shares of Capstone (CPST) closed Tuesday up 24 cents, or nearly 2.8 percent, to $8.96 on the Nasdaq, on a day when that market closed down a fraction of a percent.
