PPG Aerospace received a contract from BAE Systems Inc. to manufacture transparent armor for use on U.S. Marine tactical vehicles. The $1.2 million contract will be fulfilled by the transparent armor and specialty products group at PPG’s Sylmar facility and the armor is then shipped to the BAE Systems U.S. Combat Systems plant in Louisville, Ky. The transparent armor gun shields using PPG parts enhance survivability for Marines by providing a gunner’s protection system that enables direct vision, situational awareness and target acquisition while providing enhanced protection from small arms fire and improvised explosive device fragments. “As a previous supplier to BAE Systems, PPG Aerospace is pleased to have this additional opportunity to demonstrate its manufacturing excellence for transparent armor,” said Duke Montague, PPG Aerospace segment manager, transparent armor and specialty products. “We value the confidence BAE Systems has shown in us and our product.” Mark R.
