Medtronic and IBM have joined forces to create an app using IBM’s supercomputer Watson, the former 2011 Jeopardy! champion that beat out two of the show’s greatest contestants. The app will help people with diabetes manage blood sugar levels by analyzing data collected from Medtronic diabetes monitoring devices. With the utilization of Watson’s technology, both companies anticipate the app will predict low blood sugar events as early as three hours prior. On Wednesday, Medtronic Chief Executive Omar Ishrak and IBM Chief Executive Ginni Rometty presented the app at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Medtronic is headquartered in Dublin with its diabetes division located in Northridge. The partnership to create the app was originally announced in April 2015 and the app is scheduled for release this summer.
