Valley Community Clinic hosted its fourth-annual Patient Appreciation Days open house Aug. 16 and 17 with help from sponsor HealthNet. The event brought a few hundred community members to the center, which accommodates roughly 95,000 patient visits a year, according to spokeswoman Regina Zeinali. “This is primarily a way to thank our patients and to involve the community,” Zeinali said. The event was designed to raise awareness in the community about the clinic’s services, which include prenatal care, optometry, dental care and a teen clinic. It emphasized preventative wellness and also featured a fitness instructor and Zumba demonstration. Packages of baby products, including diapers and formula, were distributed to needy young mothers at the event. “We help out clinics like this because they help out the community,” HealthNet spokeswoman Ernestina Wozny said. Prudential also hosted a space where children could be fingerprinted for ID cards. Dentists Aid the Uninsured Two Thousand Oaks dentists are using a discount offer for uninsured community members to assist a local food bank through a dual charity program. Dr. Dar Radfar and Dr. Georgia Haddad of 805-DENTISTRY are offering a package of an oral exam, x-rays and dental cleaning for $39 to uninsured patients. That $39 is then handed over to the local food bank. “We want to do our part to ensure that our fellow Americans stay healthy and to help those who are going hungry by sponsoring this food drive for the residents of our community,” Radfar said in a prepared statement. They also are accepting non-perishable donations at their offices in Thousand Oaks and Oxnard. Glendale Businesses Aid School Eleven local businesses in Glendale have teamed up to coordinate fundraising, volunteer efforts, and to provide funds for equipment for Cerritos Elementary School, which faces an 83 percent poverty rate. Participating businesses include Glendale Toyota, Integrated Digital Technologies, Vons Market Glendale, Gwen Chevrolet and Harley Davidson of Glendale. “As business and property owners, we have a stake in this community and believe that the quality of life is directly connected to the quality of the education our children receive,” said Michael Mooslin, president of the foundation and owner of Color Me Mine Enterprises, in a prepared statement. “Cerritos Elementary School has a tremendous administrative team and quality teachers, but needs additional support in light of budget constraints.” The group has set up the Friends of Cerritos Foundation to help aid its efforts, which include providing funding for field trips, recognizing academic achievement. Additionally, the group has called on members of the community to donate time by volunteering in the child reading program and after-school program.
