Medtronic Buys Behavioral Software Company for Diabetes Research

Dublin-based Medtronic on Tuesday announced it has acquired Klue, a software company in San Jose focused on tracking real-time behavior, such as when a person is consuming food. Additional terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The technology will be useful for Medtronic’s diabetes division, located in Northridge. Klue software will be incorporated into the Medtronic Personalized Closed Loop insulin pump system currently in development, the company said. The system is designed to deliver insulin to a patient when he or she needs it, in real time, adapting to the individual’s needs. Medtronic believes that Klue’s software can help users stay ahead of high and low glucose events. “Bringing Klue and their unique meal detection capabilities into our organization will accelerate our progress to help people with diabetes live with greater freedom and better health,” Alejandro Galindo, president of the advanced insulin management division at Medtronic, said in a statement. In addition to Klue, Medtronic’s acquisition of Nutrino Health, a nutrition data science company, is expected to accelerate the development of the closed loop system. Shares of Medtronic plc (MDT) closed Tuesday down 19 cents, or less than a percent, to $114.35 on the New York Stock Exchange.
