California Lutheran University is building its new KCLU Broadcast Center, which will house National Public Radio’s first dedicated newsroom and a site for training broadcast journalism students. The center breaks ground this month and is expected to be completed in 2011. The facility will include the Paulucci Family Studios consisting of four state-of-the-art production rooms, and the Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Education with classroom and lab facilities for training broadcast journalism students. A community room and performance space will be used for meetings, lectures and special events. The broadcast center replaces the current radio station in the Mountclef Residence Hall where it has been located since 1994. KCLU serves about 70,000 weekly listeners in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and has received more than 140 awards for broadcasting excellence in the last decade. Jessica Selva
