The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the City of Los Angeles Police Department were among law enforcement agencies receiving federal grant money to combat film piracy. The $4 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice is made available by the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act. The sheriff’s department received $200,000 and the Los Angeles Police Department received an unspecified amount. The Motion Picture Association of America praised the Justice Department’s commitment to gong after those infringing on intellectual property rights, said President and Interim CEO Bob Pisano. “The motion picture industry, along with all U.S. creative industries, leads the U.S. economy in contributing to job growth, and protecting the economic engine these industries represent from theft is critical,” Pisano said. Other agencies receiving money include Fresno County Sheriff’s, Sacramento County Sheriff’s, the New York County District Attorney’s Office, New York City Police, The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, and the Virginia Department of State Police.
