The doors opened Sept. 22 to the new Macy’s store at the Antelope Valley Mall in Palmdale. Shoppers began lining up at 7 a.m. outside the store and more than 2,000 people were present for the ribbon cutting with officials from the city, Macy’s and mall owner Forest City Enterprises Inc. The one-level store is the only Macy’s to open in Southern California this year and occupies the former Gottschalks space. Before the opening the closest Macy’ to the Antelope Valley was in Valencia. The City of Palmdale provided $5 million to Forest City to renovate the building to make it fit the traditional Macy’s footprint. Mark R. Madler
