The Los Angeles Community College District has tapped a veteran educator to be its next chancellor. A nationwide search for a new leader of the nation’s largest community college district led to the selection of Daniel LaVista. LaVista starts in his new position Aug. 1, with a salary of $370,000 including health benefits and relocation expenses. La Vista succeeds Interim Chancellor Tyree Wieder, who took the position after the departure of the previous chancellor Dr. Marshall Drummond. Wieder is the former president of Los Angeles Valley College. LaVista, 66, has served with the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia since 2004. He has chaired regular meeting of the President’s of Virginia’s colleges and universities, and directed system-wide strategic planning and policy development. Prior to his position in Virginia, LaVista was the executive director of Illinois Board of Higher Education. He has also been president of three community colleges, two in Illinois and one in Maryland. Emily Pauker
