Glendale Takes Private School to Court

The City of Glendale has been granted a temporary restraining order against the operators of a local private school for failing to meet health and safety codes and obtain required permits. The order issued by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John Doyle prohibits Scholars Academy from operating at the site on Foothill Boulevard until a Sept. 17 hearing. “We have been trying to get the operators to take the necessary steps so that they can legally occupy this site,” said City Attorney Scott Howard. “Unfortunately this did not happen and the student’s families are now faced with a difficult decision.” Some of the permit issues discovered by the city included a lack of the appropriate certificate of occupancy, conditional use permit and parking reduction permit, which would allow the school to operate with fewer parking spaces than typically required. During the Sept. 17 hearing, the operators will be asked to explain why the injunction should not be issued and why the operators should be allowed to run the school without the appropriate permits.
