Chinese manufacturer BYD Corp. announced it had chosen downtown Los Angeles as the site for its North American headquarters. Little known outside the Asian market, BYD makes battery-powered vehicles, consumer products and solar energy technology. Opening its headquarters in the city has been praised by officials as way to bring new jobs to the area. A month ago, representatives from BYD were in Lancaster to announce a partnership with KB Homes to build energy efficient homes. BYD will supply at its own cost the solar panels, batteries, LED lights, and other energy-related materials for use in five homes at KB’s Alamosa community – one model home and four to be sold to buyers. Just as the City of Lancaster stepped in to make it easier to build the homes, Los Angeles offered incentives, including agreeing to purchase BYD electric vehicles, test some of its electric buses, and streamline the process to install electric charging stations in parking garages.
