Airport Commissioners to Consider New Parking System at FlyAway

A new cashless parking system has been proposed for users of the Van Nuys Flyaway bus service. The new system would save Los Angeles World Airports about $1.2 million annually once it has been paid for and replaces an obsolete system that has been in place for more than 20 years. The Board of Airport Commissioners is scheduled to vote in June on a contract with vendor Amano McGann. The new system would be installed starting in July and become fully active in November and cost about $500,000. Gone will be the two manned booths replaced with automated stations that will take credit and debit cards. The change, however, was met with some skepticism by the Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council at their May 4 meeting. Last year, the council passed a resolution expressing disappointment in the decision by the airport board to go with a cashless system to purchase tickets to ride the FlyAway bus to Los Angeles International Airport. Council Chairman Rick Flam said it was “onerous” to have a credit card only system, while member Robert Jackson was more vocal in his opposition, calling the cashless parking stations “nonsense.” “We have every right to complain,” Jackson said. “I don’t like this at all.”
