IHOP Teases Another Name Change

International House of Pancakes this week teased another name change. The company, a division of Dine Brands Global Inc. in Glendale, posted a video on its social media accounts hinting at a new meaning behind the “P” in its “IHOP” acronym. Commenters speculated that it could stand for “pizza” or “pasta” and may represent the addition of those foods to the chain’s menu. IHOP will announce the official meaning June 3. The flapjack franchise made headlines last summer for a wildly successful marketing stunt in which it temporarily changed its name to IHOb to promote a new line of burgers. The campaign was widely panned by consumers online, but it proved effective — in the first three weeks after the name change, the chain reported it sold four times more burgers than before. Shares of Dine Brands (DIN) closed Wednesday down 32 cents, or a fraction of a percent, to $88.13 on the New York Stock Exchange.
