Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law this week an expansion of the state’s film and television production tax credit program.The program is funded with an additional $330 million over two years, including $150 million targeting new soundstage development and workforce diversity.That incentive provides credits for productions that film in newly renovated or constructed facilities and meet diversity targets reflecting the state’s population, according to a release from the California Film Commission, the agency that coordinates the program.The bill also increases funding for TV projects with an additional $180 million.California Film Commission Executive Director Colleen Bell said that the existing tax credit program has a track record of success and the forward-looking action by Newsom and the state legislators will help California compete for productions more effectively.“It’s great to see our lawmakers work together to keep production jobs here at home and ensure that Californians from all backgrounds have access to career opportunities in our state’s signature industry,” Bell said in a statement.Newsom signed the legislation, backed by Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada-Flintridge) on Wednesday at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, where he was joined by lawmakers, entertainment industry leaders and crew members.
