The CW network will broadcast the inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards next month in a special hosted by filmmaker Kevin Smith and actress/writer Dani Fernandez.The awards honor superhero, science fiction, fantasy, horror, action and animation movies and television series. It airs on Jan. 10 and will stream the next day for free on The CW App and cwtv.com.Critics Choice Association Chief Executive Joey Berlin said the Los Angeles organization was pleased to be spotlighting the work of so many artists bringing to life the most engaging movies and television series.
“We are certain that Kevin and Dani will serve as tremendous hosts, who, as fans themselves, will bring energy and enthusiasm to the stage, as we honor these genres that so often go overlooked and underappreciated,” Berlin said in a statement.San Fernando Valley studios represented in the awards nominations include HBO / HBO Max / DC Universe and HBO Max with 18; Disney+ with 15; The CW and Universal with 10 each; and Warner Bros. / Warner Bros. Animation with seven. Netflix Inc. in Los Gatos led the nominations with 35.
HBO series “Lovecraft Country” had the most nominations for a television series, including Best Horror Series and Best Villain in a Series for Abbey Lee.
Actress Hilary Swank was the individual with the most nominations, including Best Actress in an Action Movie and Best Villain in a Movie for “The Hunt” from Universal as well as Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series for “Away” from Netflix. Jurnee Smollett was nominated for Actress in a Superhero Movie for “Birds of Prey” from Warner Bros. and Best Actress in a Horror Series for “Lovecraft Country.”
