Recurring TV Shows Get State Film Tax Credits

The state’s Film and TV Tax Credit program announced its latest round of television shows approved for the credits. Included in the 31 recurring shows eligible to receive tax credits are “The Rookie” and “Code Black,” from Walt Disney Co.’s ABC Studios, “Lucifer” from Warner Bros. Studio Enterprises and an untitled project from Disney ABC Cable Group. Also, approved to receive credits is HBO series “Westworld,” which has filmed in Santa Clarita and Simi Valley. This application process was only open to recurring shows that have received tax credits in the past or were moving to California from elsewhere. The round included the 13th series to relocate to the state since the expanded tax credit program took effect in 2015. Amazon Studios crime drama “Sneaky Pete” is moving from New York, where it had filmed its first two seasons. Amy Lemisch, the executive director of the California Film Commission, which administers the tax credit program, said the success of attracting relocating projects shows the program is working to affirm the state’s status as a preferred choice for TV production. “From the earliest days of TV, shows set in other locales have been filmed in California,” Lemisch said in a statement. “We’re excited to welcome another series from New York that will generate long-term employment and economic activity here at home.” New Rig Helps Visual Effects Van Nuys visual effects studio FuseFX has created a custom-built driving rig called the OmniCam. The rig can be mounted on almost any vehicle and can capture a 360-degree environment plate in a single pass. The footage can feed directly into the company’s proprietary Nucleus production management system for immediate visual effects production. David Altenau, FuseFX’s chief executive and founder, said that production clients need car composites and background plates on a regular basis but do not want the expense and time of setting up special rigging. They have also grown tired of using generic stock footage when in a time crunch, he added. “With the OmniCam we can capture the exact footage clients need and ensure there are no continuity issues,” Altenau said in a statement. “Plus, we can help clients build libraries of backgrounds that they can draw on time and time again.” LBI Broadcasting From Miami LBI Media Inc. began broadcasting Spanish-language programming from its EstrellaTV network last month on WGEN-TV, its newly acquired station in Miami. EstrellaTV programming had previously been available on the digital multicast channel of another affiliate in the Miami area. Lenard Liberman, chief executive of LBI Media, in Burbank, said the company was excited about moving the EstrellaTV shows from an affiliate to a fully owned and operated station. “EstrellaTV’s original, fast-paced entertainment programming is a perfect fit for the Miami audience,” Liberman said in a statement.  “Television shows such as our hit series ‘Rica Famosa Latina’ and ‘Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento’ will attract a large audience in this vibrant market where viewers are tiring of traditional telenovela programming.” English Firm Moves to Burbank Post-production firm Eikon Group has signed a lease to take 20,000 square feet in the Burbank Media District-North. The 10-year lease on the space at 2777 N. Ontario St. is valued at $8.1 million, according to Colliers International. Colliers Executive Vice President Nico Vilgiate and Senior Associate Kyle Stanich represented both Eikon and SSV Properties, the property owner, in the transaction. Eikon, based in London, is taking space that had been vacant for several years in the 132,000 square foot building. Eikon and SSV are working on removing part of a mezzanine to create a theater in the space. SSV also has invested in upgrades to the outdoor courtyard, entryway, lobby, as well as adding such features as polished concrete floors, modern offices with glass panels, operable windows and skylights,” Vilgiate said. “The project has transitioned from back-office space and an industrial vibe to a modern workplace with contemporary and move-in ready improvements,” he added in a statement. The building had previously been occupied by a major defense contractor so the power and fiber optic capabilities already in place suit the work that Eikon does, including digital re-mastering, editing, special graphics effects, subtitling, and voice-over recording. Eikon has provided post-production services to such recent films as “Blade Runner 2049,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “The Greatest Showman” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Audio Firm Sets Up in Burbank Audio company Formosa Group recently opened its seventh office after signing a lease to take 8,800 square feet at the Hanhai Civic Plaza in downtown Burbank. Formosa will have the space at the building at 250 E. Olive Ave. for seven years. Founded in 2013, Formosa, based in Los Angeles, provides audio post-production services for feature films, music, gaming and home entertainment. Its credits include “Justice League,” “Game of Thrones” and “Blade Runner 2049. Creative International Investment, the landlord, was represented in the deal by Katie Bernhisel and Dillon Moscone, of Cushman & Wakefield. Cushman’s Mark Robinson and Arlene Sommer represented Formosa. Cushman manages the property. Staff Reporter Mark R. Madler can be reached at (818) 316-3126 or [email protected].
