Ventura County Star in Spinoff Deal

The Ventura County Star newspaper has a new owner in Journal Media Group Inc., a spin-off of prior owner E.W. Scripps Co., it was announced Wednesday. Journal Media, in Milwaukee, will operate newspapers and websites in 14 markets in nine states. In addition to the Star, in Camarillo, the papers include the flagship Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Commercial Appeal in Memphis. Star Publisher Shanna Cannon said that while some things will change at the paper, serving readers remains a top priority. “I believe in the future of the Ventura County Star and the employees that make our company thrive,” Cannon said in a Star article. “I am excited about working for a corporation whose vision puts people and our communities at the center.” Journal Media was formed when Scripps, in Cincinnati, spun off its newspaper holdings and then merged them with the Journal Communications Inc., a publicly traded media company in Milwaukee. “The opportunity to be more engaged and more meaningful in the lives of our customers has never been bigger, and we look forward to transforming our relationships with both consumers and the advertisers who wish to reach them,” Journal Media Chief Executive Tim Stautberg said in a prepared statement. Journal Media has about 3,000 employees nationwide.
