BYD Showcases Articulated Bus Named Lancaster

After two years of development, BYD Motors Inc. has completed its first articulated electric bus and named it for the city in which it was made – Lancaster. Officials with the Chinese battery and vehicle manufacturer and from Lancaster were present this week for the introduction of the bus at the American Public Transportation Association Expo in Houston. The 60-foot articulated Lancaster eBus can travel about 170 miles with a passenger load of up to 120 passengers. “These buses run entirely off battery power lasting up to 24 hours on a single charge, with single off-peak charging time of 2 to 4 hours,” said BYD Motors Fleet Sales Vice President Brendan Riley in a prepared statement. The bus unveiled in Houston on Monday is a demonstration vehicle that will undergo testing at the Altoona Bus Research and Testing Center in Altoona, Pa. Also brought to Houston was a 40-foot electric bus made in Lancaster for the Antelope Valley Transit Authority. BYD opened its Lancaster factory in May 2013 and delivered the first two buses about a year later. The company also has a facility in the city for assembling the battery packs used in the buses.
