Disney, DirecTV to Offer New Services

Walt Disney Co. and DirecTV have renewed an agreement on distributing ABC, Disney and ESPN content live and through video-on-demand on television and mobile devices. The Burbank media and entertainment giant is adding new services for customers of DirecTV, in El Segundo, including ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN3 and Fusion, a cable and satellite joint venture between Disney and Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications Inc., in New York. Starting early next year, DirecTV viewers will be able to view ABC and ESPN content on Internet-connected devices through Disney’s WATCH streaming service and the DirecTV Everywhere app for smartphones and tablets. David Preschlack, executive vice president, affiliate sales and marketing, Disney and ESPN Media Networks, said the renewed multi-year agreement strengthens the value of a multi-channel video subscription. “Our new agreement with DirecTV reinforces that approach and brings to a successful conclusion the renewal over the past several years of deals with each of our top 10 affiliates,” Preschlack said in a prepared statement. Shares closed down 27 cents, or a fraction of 1percent, to $94.42 on the New York Stock Exchange.
