BioSolar Inc. received its first commercial order for its components used in photovoltaic solar modules. The order from an undisclosed customer will be used to manufacture solar panels for electric utility vehicles with future shipments to be used for military and other mobile applications, said BioSolar Chief Executive David Lee. The Santa Clarita company makes backsheets for solar panels, the outermost layer protecting the photovoltaic cells and electrical components. BioSolar makes its backsheets from renewable biomass, or plant material, that is more durable than petroleum-based backsheets, according to the company. The first commercial order is an important step for the company with the next major milestone being orders from large scale solar manufacturers, Lee said. “BioSolar is now in position to expand sales into mainstream PV markets as we have completed successful internal testing, qualification and UL material certification,” Lee said in a prepared statement.
